I’m Russ Kissel, the creator behind RSKissel Media and Detroit River Live. I created this site to share the places I explore, the gear I use, and the things I learn along the way.
A lot of what you’ll find here comes directly from everyday life—boating on the Detroit River and Great Lakes, creating videos and livestreams, working around our Michigan ranch, experimenting with technology, and finding products that make those things easier or more enjoyable.
WHY I REVIEW GEAR
I believe a useful product review should come from actually using the product.
The reviews on this site are based on my own experience with gear I’ve purchased, tested, installed, carried on the boat, used for content creation, or put to work around the ranch. I focus on what was easy, what wasn’t, what worked well for me, and anything I think another buyer should know before spending their money.
I’m not trying to review everything. I’d rather share useful information about products I actually have experience with.
DETROIT RIVER LIVE
Detroit River Live grew out of my love of boating and spending time on the water.
From the Detroit River and Lake Erie to bridges, freighters, waterfronts, landmarks, and quiet days on the river, I share the experience from the perspective of someone who is actually out there enjoying it.
Much of the content is intentionally simple—real scenery, natural sound, and the experience of being on the water.
RANCH LIFE & MICHIGAN
Not everything happens on the river.
Our Michigan ranch is another important part of what I share, including seasonal projects, wildlife, outdoor equipment, tools, technology, gardening, and everyday life on the property.
It also gives me a completely different environment for using and testing gear—from cameras and networking equipment to tools and outdoor products.
CREATOR GEAR & TECHNOLOGY
Creating Detroit River Live and RSKissel Media means I use a growing collection of cameras, microphones, mounts, computers, networking equipment, livestreaming gear, and other technology.
When something becomes part of my real setup, I may review it here so other creators and everyday users can see how it performs outside of a product advertisement.
I’m especially interested in gear that makes filming, livestreaming, editing, connectivity, and everyday setup simpler and more dependable.
